Time for a Canadian national car
Time for a Canadian national car.
Call it protectionism or even communism, but hey that is what some governments have been doing for decades, albeit unfair trade practices. The European Union has been subsidising and protecting the almighty Air Bus for decades. In fact, the reason a company like Air Bus has grown in maturity and is very successful is because of those very generous subsidies it gets from its sponsor governments. That is the sole reason why Air Bus has achieved market parity with Boeing.
It is also a well known fact that some countries have for decades been flooding other markets with their cars and other products, while they at the same time impose strict restriction on products from other countries. Countries like China and South Korea for instance have either been blocking products from certain industrialized countries entering their economies or by instituting excessively rigorous testing on foreign products to placing higher insurance premiums on foreign cars, not to mention manipulation of currencies by countries like Japan and China which artificially make their products cheaper.
As a matter of fact, there is nothing more communism than the current bailout packages which several governments have implemented. If anything, the global economic meltdown and the subsequent bailouts has shown that, governments still do have significant role to play even in market economies. Don’t get me wrong, I’ m not trying to over-emphasize the role of government in a market economy such as Canada’s, how ever, we do know every successful example of the market economy has involved the role of the governments.
In any case, I strongly believe if the above mentioned plan is carefully implemented, it would be a far superior economic stimulus plan and a smart investment that would create solid jobs. Besides, it will also mean Canadians would not have to automatically panic every time things go bad in the United States.
By the way, when it comes to protecting national interest, it must be protected to the fullest. I might add that, Canada’s economic interest and its national interest are not separate compartments. Canada has been too generous. I think Canada has one of the smallest trade enforcement agencies of the industrialised countries and it’s time to go for it, albeit long overdue. Make Canadians proud. Go get Canadians a car they can call their own. You can do it. The need for Canada to act is now.
